LO1 - Be able to produce pre-production materials for an original short film or sequence of a film

TREATMENT

Producer/director/editor - Mitch Morton  Client - UTC sheffield

Title: Modified lifestyle

Form and genre: The form will be a short film. It will fall into the genre of a documentary.

Content and style: The documentary is going to be about the car lifestyle and what modified cars mean to people. so the main bulk of the documentary will be of cars and events involving them for example car meets and shows. I will also have interviews which include modifiers saying what cars mean to them. The film will also include chilled out music to show the laid back lifestyle of cruising.

Position in the market: This film will be aimed to be showed at film festivals such as dockets and then be released on the internet on websites like youtube and Vimeo.

Target audience  My target audience for this project would be those that are into modifying cars and the car cruising scene. The age bracket for this film will be between 18 and 35 and will fall into the social category of ABC1 as the lifestyle needs a lot of disposable income in order to be able to modify cars.

Locations:
  • peak district country roads
  • modifiers garages
  • car meet locations vary

Legal and ethical considerations :
  • Make sure the promotion of illegal street racing and modifications is not in this documentary and only the promotion of legal actions are included.
  • Make sure that consent is given when filming cars as it contains the registration plate which some drivers don't want broadcasted.
  • No offence is given to any group or single person in the film.

Camera –GOPRO Hero, Canon 650D DSLR
Sound - rode shotgun microphone, portable recorder

Proposed script

Narrator - In 2013 there was a record of 32 million cars on the roads in the UK. With these stats It is proven that the car is becoming a larger part of our lives than ever, some more than others. Large majority of the uk’s population see the car as a mode of transport, others, see it as much more. The underground modified car scene is a hidden culture which is far from just a group of mates in a car park, it is in its own right a lifestyle. It brings people together over one common interest forming one big community sparking conversations with people from every kind of back ground possible all with different rides from Nissan GT-R’s right down to vauxhall corsa, all of which show the same passion and pride in what they run. That is the modified lifestyle.

Narrator question - why do you modify cars?

Interviewee - Makes it my own, i want to make it faster, i like to look at my car and think how can i make it better or faster or just more better looking.

Second interviewee - I like to put my own touch on just a standard car and it just makes me who i am. im always thinking about cars like whats my next mod or how i can change something I've already done to make it better. Its this constant evolve what keeps me excited it creates its own story, to me its much more than a car.

Narrator question - what do you like most about the modified community?

interviewee - Every one is so friendly and I've never once felt intimidated or threatened, yes there is banter and friendly insults but thats with anything. Its my way of socialising and meeting new people, cars is just the perfect convosation starter. and when start talking about cars with someone it could go on for hours haha. Another thing i love about this community is that every one is different and its the same with the cars, no two cars are the same and i guess thats the beauty of it, making your car a one off version.

Narrator question - what do you love about driving?

Applying appropriate transitions and effects

I applied filters to all my clips to make all the footage look uniform as I filmed the footage at different times in different lighting conditions. The filters also give the footage a warmer feel and make it look that little more professional.

For the audio I layered the sound track "Drive by MOOG" which I felt fitted the film perfectly and gave a subtle mellow tone. On top of this i then layered the voices of interviewees who's cars featured in this film. It was their answers to why they modify and what driving means to them. This audio is what gives the film meaning and explains its purpose.

On some transitions a layered stock footage of burning film which I then turned the opacity down to 10%. This created a more interesting transition between some of the clips and I had also spotted that it is a quite popular technique used in this genre of videos.
